Farnham Castle Anniversary Shoot
Laura and Chris got in touch a few weeks ago to see if I could do a portrait session with them on their 10th wedding anniversary, at Farnham Castle. Luckily I was free so we set it up. It was nice to do the shoot on the exact anniversary, and in the location where they got married – Farnham Castle.
They even wore the same outfits from their wedding! I must say I wouldn’t have guessed they had been married ten years, I’d have said two or three!
Although we scheduled the shoot for late afternoon it was still very hot – it’s been a crazy few weeks lately with temperatures in the high 20s and 30s Celcius almost every day. I was certainly feeling the heat, so kudos to Laura and Chris who braved the high temperatures in their wedding attire.
Photos in the Castle Keep
We started our shoot up in the Castle Keep, as we knew the venue would want to lock the gates at 5pm, so that made it easier for them. Laura and Chris had a few specific shots that their wedding photographer had done which they wanted to recreate, so we made sure to get those done, as well as some of my own ideas.
I had brought my AD200 battery-powered studio flash to use on a light-stand off-camera, which allowed me to pose Laura and Chris with their backs to the sun, or in the shade as much as possible, so they didn’t have the sun in their eyes. I then lit them with the flash when needed. This is a technique I use quite a lot on sunny days. The back-light from the sun gives a nice halo effect and it’s more comfortable for the couple.
Garden photos at Farnham Castle
After we’d completed our session in the Keep we headed down to the gardens and used the brick wall as a seat, and the view over Farnham town as a backdrop for a few photos. Then we headed around to the north side of the gardens to get a selection of images with the shrubs and flowers as a background, as well as in the walk around the inside of the walls.
Indoor photos at Farnham Castle
Finally, we took a few images on the staircase and in one of the upstairs rooms. The whole shoot took about two hours (which flew by!) so we had plenty of time to get the shots they were looking for.
It was a great pleasure photographing Laura and Chris’s Farnham Castle anniversary shoot, and I hope I’m still around for the next one!
If you’re getting celebrating an anniversary or perhaps just got engaged and would like to have a special shoot like this (or just a portrait session at a great location like this one), please do get in touch.
